The author did not hold back and went really dark on several occasions with Paige's storyline.

Penryn's sister, Paige, oh! My heart broke reading about Paige and what she goes through during her time in captivity. Her crazy mom provided me with a lot of comic relief, probably unintended, but funny nonetheless. Each of them has hidden depths that's not immediately visible but come out during crucial points in the story. They're flawed and imperfect, but their love for and loyalty to each other shine through at every scene and dialogue. What follows is Penryn's epic journey of finding her sister, filled with battle scenes and twists and turns, and her struggle to hold her family together.įirst, I loved Penryn and her family. Penryn then has no choice but to try to save the injured angel (although he's technically an enemy) so he can help her find her sister and get her back. Unfortunately one of the attackers flies off with Penryn's sister in his clutches. That proves to be the tipping point that helps the injured angel drives off his attackers. Seeing the unfairness of it all, Penryn helps the injured angel by throwing back his sword to him so he has a weapon to defend himself. The injured angel's sword is kicked out of range during the fight, and he's eventually subdued by the other 3 angels and his wings cut out from him. What they accidentally encounter is an unfair but deadly fight between 1 injured angel and 3 other angels. When the book opens, our heroine, Penryn, is in the process of moving her family (her wheelchair bound 7-year old sister and schizophrenic mom) to yet another safe shelter, when angels drop literally from the sky in front of them.

It's 6 weeks after Angels attacked Earth - for no good reason, mind you - with devastating effect on humans and humanity. Fast paced story line, heart-pounding adventure with plenty of twists and turns, believable characters, and a satisfying ending. No doubt, one of the most exciting books I've read this year.
